August 19 , 2009 Harvest Time: Food Security in MaineAssuring a healthy and safe food supply is an ongoing challenge. Globalization and cut-throat price competition have put many local farms out of business. Recent changes in federal laws are also challenging local farmers and food systems with costly regulations, some of which may sacrifice food's health giving properties in a drive to eliminate biological contamination. Local pressures, such as sprawling homes and businesses are taking away Maine's most valuable farmland. We'll talk about everything from home gardens, to marketing local produce to international collaborations for sustainable food systems. Join us as we look at strategies to build healthy and safe food systems in Maine. Join our dialogue at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 19th on WERU 89.9 FM, the voice of many voices. Guests:
