June 15, 2011:Body Image, Drugs and Diet: Media and the Self

How do we cope with the barrage of media and advertising that project how we should look, feel and behave? Who is behind the camera? What are their goals?

Join us for a dialogue about the role of popular culture and advertising on self-image, substance abuse, eating disorders. We'll be joined by students from Mount Desert High School to talk about the images they see and the pressures on their community. Ed Oechslie will help us to understand why this is happening and what we can do to strengthen ourselves and stay healthy.

Ed Oechslie, a board certified art therapist and licensed clinical counselor, joined the staff as Executive Director in January 2006. He holds a degree in art therapy from Southwestern College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has extensive experience in the trauma-sensitive treatment of substance abuse and codependency.

In his approach with clients he often uses expressive therapies, and has a gentle, client-centered focus. He describes his role in the therapeutic relationship as “a witness for each client's journey to empowerment through self-discovery.”
