Common Health Upcoming Programs:*** Third Wednesday of the Month 10:00 - 11:00 AM ***September 15: Back to School: How Health Affects Learning Some children thrive in school while others struggle or fail. Health plays a critical role in providing children with the capacity to participate in learning. Hunger, malnutrition, pain, low-energy or excessive energy, stress, ADD and a myriad of health problems reduce children's ability to learn and have life long consquences. October 20: Politics and Public Health As we approach this year's state and local elections Common Health will host a dialogue about political leadership and public health. Direction and misdirection in public health policy are the consequence of our choices for leadership and a gaggle of powerful special interests. November 17: Energy and Health The start of another heating season hits us in the wallet and in the lungs. As furnaces, woodstoves and boilors turn on our air is fouled by particulates and toxic pollutants. Indoor air quality can also nose-dives as windows close and tobacco, household chemicals and other residues build-up. We'll talk about the autumn environmental shift and ways to keep the air cleaner and healthier. December15: Winter Fitness So what's do snow, ice, chilling winds mean for keeping fit? A lot. Rural Maine is a winter wonderland, but daily exercise during the long winters is a challenge. We'll talk with fitness and outdoor recreation leaders about ways to stay active in all weather.
